Mokaloba grilled
MASERU – Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Inspector General, Ramanka Mokaloba, was last Friday grilled by the police over his role in the events of August 2014 that the government says was an attempted coup.
thepost understands that the police were keen to understand what role Inspector General Mokaloba might have played in the events that left Sub Inspector Mokheseng Ramahloko dead.
Inspector General Mokaloba, who was then a brigadier in the army, was commander of the operations that saw soldiers storm the Prime Minister’s residence and the police headquarters in Maseru.
Sources within the police say Inspector General Mokaloba is believed to have detailed information of what happened during the raids because of the position he held within the army.
It is also believed that he could have played a part in the disturbances, the source said.
Police spokesman Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli confirmed last night that they summoned Inspector General Mokaloba to help them with investigations.
He however could not reveal details of the investigations.
On the night of August 30, 2014, the army then under Lt Gen Tlali Kamoli, attacked the police headquarters in Maseru and the Mabote police station which houses the police’s Special Operations Unit (SOU).
The attacks came after Prime Minister Thomas Thabane fired Lt Gen Kamoli who refused to leave office.
Thabane fled into exile in South Africa.
Inspector General Mokaloba was the Brigade Commander of the LDF at the time of the raid.
Sources said Inspector General Mokaloba could be the best person to unpack what happened during that night.
This is the second time that Inspector General Mokaloba has been summoned by the police.
Sometime last year he was also grilled over the same matter.
Major Inspector Mokaloba was promoted to his current position of Inspector General of the LDF last year when the government “restructured” the army.
