Netball association steps up preps

Maseru – The Lesotho Netball Association (LNA) is hard at work preparing for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Under-20 Games to be held in Angola in December, according to the association’s public relations officer, Matšepo Mohau.

Mohau said LNA wanted to use the same squad that represented Lesotho at the Netball Youth World Cup qualifiers in Botswana in July.

However, five of that squad has turned 21 and three have been ruled out with injuries. Only four players from the trip to Botswana remain.

The LNA has identified 14 players for a preliminary training squad and the number will be cut down to 12 for the final selection for the Region 5 Games.

The players were scouted at Lesotho Institutes School Association (LISA) games held in August and national trials in September.

“We had trials in September and invited girls from Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe, Teyateyaneng, Semonkong, Mafeteng, Quthing and Maseru to identify talent. Other players were scouted during the LISA games,” Mohau said.

She added: “We wanted to continue with the team that represented us at the Under-20 Netball World Cup qualifiers in Botswana but five of them have turned 21 and three are out with injuries so we are left with only four who will be part of the team going to Angola.”

Mohau said the association is struggling to secure sponsorship for the team. So far the team has only secured Lehakoe Recreational Sports Centre as a venue for its training sessions.

“We have been looking for sponsors but there is nothing much so far,” Mohau said. “We have started going to the gym on weekends. We also had a one-week camp during the Independence Day week where we were sponsored by the Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission (LSRC).”

“However, on weekends for players to come (to training), the coaches have to pay from their own pockets. The only sponsorship we have so far is Lehakoe where we will be going for gym until we leave for Angola in December.”

LNA is also planning to host a summer tournament sometime this month.
