New yoghurt to hit shelves

MASERU – THE long awaited Sebabatso, a new yoghurt brand by the National University of Lesotho (NUL) students, was launched yesterday.

Thanks to the M700 000-grant from Metropolitan Lesotho a year ago, the yoghurt is now ready for the market.

The university’s Department of Animal Science, in the Faculty of Agriculture, used the donation to establish a yoghurt processing unit for increasing the scale of production.
Head of the department, Dr Puleng Matebesi, said the university scientists have been flirting with the idea of producing yoghurt for years.
She said when they began making Sebabatso (the admirable one) they only had one pot in which they produced only five litres of yoghurt per day.
They would sell it within the department.

She said they realised there was a ready market for the product when they held an expo at Pioneer Mall in 2015.
It was then that they asked the Dean of the Department to help them produce this yoghurt on a large scale.
“That is when Metropolitan came to our rescue,” Matebesi said.

She said there is a great change in their production because they are able to produce 250-300 litres per day.
Matebesi said soon Sebabatso will be available in shops across the country.

NUL Vice Chancellor Professor Nqosa Mahao said the university is now coming up with innovations that help empower communities.
“This means if you are a villager and you have cattle, you now have a market where you can supply your milk,” Mahao said.

He said the university wants to be a player in the “food security challenge that our country faces and also drawing out of our people some entrepreneur skills”.
Mahao said the university has been encouraged to generate revenue from the expertise it had and the Sebabatso project is one of the ways it will achieve that goal.
He said Metropolitan Lesotho’s donation to the project shows progressive leadership in a corporate sector “because most times you will find that there is still a huge gap between the interfaces linking the higher education sector in a corporate world”.

He said Metropolitan is certainly a trendsetter in this country. Mahao said they really appreciate Metropolitan for showing what should really happen in the corporate world.
He said the university has “innovation and inventions that are only waiting for those resources to invest in growing them up so that they could be available to the world out there”.

NUL Dean of Faculty of Agriculture Professor Keregero Keregero said Metropolitan deserves a round of applause for the donation.
“We have every reason to believe that we are going to be successful,” he said.

“We would not have come this far if it was not because of Metropolitan Lesotho’s intervention.”
Metropolitan Lesotho Managing Director, Nkau Matete, said they donated money to the university because there was the involvement of the community.
He said the fact that Roma villagers will be the ones supplying milk is good.

“We do this to get our company involved in the community based projects,” Matete said.
He said when they make a follow up for this project, they want to see the university progressing and producing in larger scales.
