Teachers plot new strike

MASERU – THE spokesperson of theLesotho Association of Teachers (LAT) Letsatsi Ntsibolane says they are mulling to embark on a country- wide strike in the near future.
He however did not state the exact dates when the strike will be in full swing.
Ntsibolane told thepost in an interview this week that they are already holding meetings as to how their intended massive strike will unfold.

“We started talks since last Friday and even this coming Friday we will have another meeting,” Ntsibolane said.
Lesotho teachers have been on intermittent strikes since February this year asking the government to address their grievances including salary increments and improved working conditions amongst others.
Teachers also wanted the government to hold some regular training for the new curriculum and to be supplied with the needed teaching materials for students.
“Although the day is not yet chosen, the fact of the matter is that we are preparing ourselves for the strike,” Ntsibolane.

He said their aim was to go on with the strike from February till December, but they decided to give the employer a chance to deal with their issues.
He said it is for this reason that they went back to work.
“But we do not see the government doing any of the things we requested, we have been waiting and this is enough now,” he added.
Ntsibolane said there are some issues that do not even need money but simply need the government to do, like passing of the teachers’ bill in parliament.
He said the government is failing to do just that.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr Neo Liphoto said he did not have official statement from teachers that they are preparing to embark on an industrial action.
But he had only heard about that from the social media.
Dr Liphoto said he will wait for those who are responsible to come to the fore with the matter.
