Econet hands over food parcels to orphanage
MASERU-AMID a biting Covid-19 lockdown that has eroded livelihoods, Econet Telecom Lesotho is still remembering the vulnerable amongst us.
On Tueday, the company proved to be a Good Samaritan when it donated food parcels worth M10 000 to the Ministry of Hope, a home for orphaned children in Katlehong in Maseru.
Econet’s Public Relations Manager, Puleng Masoabi, said the company donates food parcels and other necessities of life to orphanages through their philanthropic arm called Higher Life Foundation.
The handover ceremony should have happened in December but was postponed due to increasing Covid-19 infections.
“This is part of what we do on a monthly basis but the month of December is always special as we try to ensure that kids at a selected home enjoy the festive mood,” Masoabi said during the handover ceremony.
December, she said, is a time when both management and employees of Econet take time off their busy schedules to feed and play with kids at the orphanages.
However, this time around because of Covid-19 they could not do so.
“The event was postponed with the hope that by now the virus would be under control, however, upon realising that the virus is still spreading like wildfire and accelerating at a higher rate, the company decided to continue with the donations,” Masoabi said.
The caretaker of the Ministry of Hope, ’Mamonyane Mohale, expressed her gratitude to Econet for the donations which she said couldn’t have come at the perfect time.
“Although we have about 25 children, some still live with their relatives whom we have to support together with the child,” Mohale said.
She said the number of children has increased because they do not separate young children from their siblings.
Mohale said they serve as a rehabilitation centre providing nutritious meals.
The Ministry of Hope orphanage currently cares for 25 children aged between one and 16 years.
