Famo gangster kills soldier

MASERU – A suspected Famo gangster allegedly fatally shot a soldier and seriously injured another during a fight at the Maseru Border last Saturday.
A street vendor has also died after being hit by a stray bullet.

The injured soldier was admitted at Queen ’Mamohato Memorial Hospital.
The soldiers were part of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF)’s Military Intelligence (MI). The suspect was part of an alleged Famo gang that was on its way back to South Africa from the funeral of a colleague in Matelile Ha-Tebelo.

An eyewitness told thepost that trouble started when the MI officers tried to search the gang members. They suspected they had illegal guns, a source said.
A young man from the group, alleged to be from Ha-Qhoane from Mohale’s Hoek, refused to be searched. “He took to his heels and the officers followed him,” the eyewitness added.
The eyewitness said the man cocked his gun and threatened to shoot the officers.

He said the man then fired several shots at the officers. The soldiers fired back at the suspect and shot him on the hand.
The two soldiers were rushed to the Makoanyane Military Hospital where one of them was pronounced dead. The other was rushed to Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital where he is battling for his life.

The eyewitness said the gangster threw his gun in a dustbin and later handed himself to the police at the border gate.
In a statement the LDF Public Affairs Office confirmed the incident but called for calm.

It said some suspects are currently assisting the police with investigations.
The LDF said it will give further details when investigations are completed.

The press statement said the names of the deceased will be announced when their families have been duly informed.
Police spokesperson Senior Inspector Lerato Motseki said the suspect is in police custody pending investigations.

“So far we are not yet sure what has caused the shooting. The suspect will help us,” she said. Motseki said the suspect will appear in court as soon as they are done with their investigations.
