Matekane loses M15 million

MASERU – MATEKANE Group of Companies (MGC), a conglomerate owned by business mogul Sam Matekane, could have lost M15.7 million through an elaborate scam.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli confirmed to thepost last night that MGC opened a fraud case on Tuesday this week. Superintendent Mopeli said an investigation has started but no arrests have been made.

thepost has been told that on March 30 a person pretending to be working for Barloworld Equipment Lesotho informed MGC that Barloworld had changed its name and banking details.
He then supplied the new name and account details with instructions that MGC deposits the M15.7 million it owed to Barloworld. The money was transferred.

Barloworld Equipment Lesotho supplies equipment oil, coolant and diesel fuel to MGC.
The fraud was discovered a few days later when officials from Barloworld called MGC’s accounts department asking about the payment.
MGC officials then alerted the police.
Mopeli said they have been informed that the money could still be between banks and has not yet reached the suspect’s hands.
He said there is a high chance the company could still recover the money.

Last night MGC Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing, ’Mamotake Matekane, said she had “checked with the accounts people and she had not seen anything irregular”.
She said there was another manager in accounts who was absent yesterday and she did not know if he was the one dealing with matter.
“If there is something tangible l will get back to you but as for now, I have nothing tangible,” she said.
She said the manager who was not at work might be the one who had opened the case with the police and she would get to know when he comes back.

Efforts to get comment from Barloworld were not successful because the manager who could respond to media enquiries was not in the office.
Staff who were still in the office refused to give the manager’s contact details.
