Murder suspect escapes from hospital

MASERU – A 28-year-old Mosotho man who had been admitted to hospital with serious gunshot wounds on both thighs disappeared at Mafeteng Hospital last Thursday. Ramolete Masiu, from Makaung in Mafeteng, was wanted in South Africa for allegedly gunning down a Hawks captain on May 25.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli said the suspect, with other men who are now at large, attacked the Hawks officer while he was on duty. Masiu with his accomplices robbed the deceased of his car, a firearm and a cell phone. They later abandoned the car and fled.

Masiu’s luck however ran out and he was arrested in Lesotho. He was later hospitalised due to his serious injuries. Mopeli said the suspect disappeared at the hospital while the police officer who had been assigned to guard him went out to answer his phone.

He said when the police officer returned, he was stunned when he realised the suspect was no longer on his bed. Mopeli said the police had since launched investigations to find out what happened. “There have been no arrests as yet but we are calling on members of the community to assist us with regards to information,” Supt Mopeli said.

Mafeteng District Medical Officer, Dr Sechaba Makiti, said the disappearance of the suspect had left them stunned. He said the suspect had been at the hospital for three days and was due to be released the following day. Dr Makiti said it is not common for patients to escape from the hospital illegally.

“We do not know what he said to the security officers at the gate if he passed through the gate,” he said. He said the police officer who was guarding the suspect told them that he was in another room charging his phone when the suspect disappeared. And when he returned, the suspect was nowhere to be seen.

Sources that spoke to thepost said they suspected some high profile individuals at the hospital had a hand in Masiu’s dramatic escape.
