Plot to kill Mochoboroane

MASERU – AN opposition MP for the Movement for Economic Change (MEC), Thabo Ramatla, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly plotting to assassinate his party leader Selibe Mochoboroane.
Ramatla, who is popularly known as Mahapu, appeared before the Mafeteng magistrate’s court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody.
It was not yet known if Ramatla will apply for bail.

According to court papers seen by thepost this week, Ramatla allegedly hired some assassins to kill Mochoboroane and another party stalwart Jimmy Ramakoalibane.
Ramakoalibane is a businessman based in Mafeteng.
Ramatla is alleged to have conspired with Mothobi Linake to kill Mochoboroane and Ramakoalibane in June this year.

The charge sheet says Ramatla incited Linake to kill Mochoboroane and Ramakoalibane on his behalf.
Mochoboroane is the MP for Thabana-Morena Constituency.
The charge sheet says the conspiracy happened near Mahapu Fruit & Vegetable shop in Mafeteng.

The MEC spokesman, Motlalentoa Khoete, told thepost yesterday that Ramatla was expelled from the party for breaching the party’s rules earlier this year.
Khoete said Ramatla was kicked out after he defied a party rule that barred MPs from renting out vehicles to the government.
He said the MEC’s National Executive Committee had agreed that no MP would rent his vehicles to the government because they already earned a decent salary every month.

Khoete said the party argued that MPs already had other facilities like the huge M500 000 interest-free loans which they could access from the government.
He said the party wanted the opportunity to rent out vehicles to the government to be given to desperate and jobless Basotho so that they too could improve their lives.
In clear defiance of the party’s position, Khoete said Ramatla went against the party resolution and rented his vehicle to the government.

Khoete said they had documentary evidence proving that Ramatla indeed rented his vehicle to the government in defiance of the party.
“We therefore resolved to kick him out of the party as he did not adhere to the party’s policy,” Khoete said.
Khoete said he could not say much on the issue because it is already in the hands of the courts.
Mochoboroane could not be reached for comment last night.
