Soldier in trouble over abduction plot

MASERU – A soldier who allegedly conspired to abduct a Chinese businessman and demand an M18 million ransom from his business partner was charged this week.
Nkibili Hlao, whose rank could not be established at the time of going to print last night, allegedly conspired to abduct Hong Zi Yaun at Upper Thamae in November 2019.

The prosecution says Hlao contravened the Penal Code Act of 2010.
The relevant section says if a person agrees with another person to commit a crime, they commit a crime.
This is so even if they failed to do what they wanted to do because of the existence of facts which render the commission of the offence impossible.
Hlao was granted a M1 000 bail deposit under conditions that he should attend remands and stand trial and not interfere with crown witnesses.
The case was before Maseru Magistrate Qoo, who remanded it to November 6.

Meanwhile, a couple was brutally murdered in ’Malehlakana village in Butha-Buthe district last week.
The Councillor of Ngoajane Community Council Seooe Matjelo said they were informed by the children of the deceased, Ngaka Belenti, about what happened to their parents.
Matjelo said it appears that the attackers were armed with guns and knives.
The attackers stormed the house and attacked the husband in front of his wife and two children, aged eight and two.
Matjelo said the man was found with wounds around his body and a knife was still stuck in his body.

Then they informed the police of the harrowing incident who instantly rushed to the scene of the crime.
“We had to wait for the police to examine the body,” Matjelo said.
His wife, ’Mamosekesi Belenti, aged 27, was however missing.

He said the children told the community that their mother had been kidnapped by the assailants.
Five days later, the woman’s body was found across the border in South Africa.
He said it appeared that she was raped before being killed.
Investigation are continuing.
