Back-to-school tourney set for next week

MASERU – The Annual Back-to-School Tournament aimed at collecting school essentials for under-privileged students is set to kick-off next week. The three-day tournament will feature basketball, netball and volleyball competitions.

According to one of the event’s organisers, Tumelo Mara, four basketball teams, three netball clubs and four volleyball sides have already registered to enter the event and the registration period will only close next week.
The tournament started last year and this is its second edition.

Organisers said they did not collect much last year and the little they had was donated to schools in Maseru.
Mara said this year they are aiming to reach schools outside Maseru and they have already started collecting.
He said spectators that will attend the tournament are welcome to bring their donations as well.

“We are collecting school essentials and the sanitary towels,” Mara said.
“Essentials could be school uniforms, exercise books, pens, pencils and things like that as long as they are things needed at school. This is the second time we are hosting the tournament and it is not only basketball, we have netball and volleyball as well,” he said.

Mara said the tournament is not exclusive to established sports clubs and he urged corporations to form teams and enter to compete.
“We are aiming to reach schools in other districts (this year); we didn’t collect a lot of things last year and we only donated to schools in Maseru but we are now hoping to go outside,” Mara said.

“We don’t know these kids so we are working with schools. The schools are the ones who will identify kids that need help the most and we will hand over to them,” he said.
This year the tournament’s winners will walk away with M2 000 while the runners up will receive M800. The registration fee is M500.
