Econet to host awards ceremony

MASERU – The Premier League Management committee (PLMC) together with league sponsors Econet will host an end of 2017/18 season awards ceremony at Avani Lesotho Hotel on Friday.
With the ceremony, the PLMC will officially bring the 2017/18 Econet Premier League season to an end and flip the page to the upcoming 2018/19 season.
Yesterday the league and Econet released a joint press statement which explained the awards will be held as a gala dinner attended by the 13 clubs that contested the 2017/18 season.
Also due to attend the awards are “key sporting authorities, government officials and other prestigious guests from non-governmental organisations” the press release read.
The occasion will be a platform where the Econet Premier League will celebrate the 2017/18 season’s achievements and its learning curves while preparing to embark on the new campaign, the league said.

“The growth and development vision for local football will be briefly shared at the same event,” the league added.
“This includes new ways in which the (Econet Premier League) will maintain more effective and on-going communication with the football community at large to keep them updated and abreast of all the excitement and happenings within the league, as well as how Econet is going to help clubs to create and maintain growing electronic databases of their supporters and followers.”
Econet’s acting chief executive officer, Dennis Plaatjies, reiterated that when the telecommunications company returned to local football last September after an eight-year absence, it did not expect a smooth first season and that was indeed the case.

Plaatjies said, as a company, Econet hopes to launch products and services that will facilitate the sustainable growth of football in the country.
“We are a telecommunications company and we entered into the contract (with the Premier League) with our eyes open, ready to support and develop football in our country and that is why we engaged professionals along the way so that they can help us achieve our obligation,” said Plaatjies in the statement.
PLMC president John Leuta added that after clinching the biggest sponsorship deal in the history of premier league; the league had to work hard and ensure good working relations with the sponsor.

Last September Econet jumped on board to sponsor Lesotho’s elite league until 2020. Econet pledged to fork out M2 million in each of its three seasons in the league taking its overall backing to a grand total of M6 million.
“A well laid out communication plan plays a vital role in any relationship,” Leuta said.

“We have developed a very mutual understanding through our weekly meetings with Econet which contributed to our strengthened partnership and we hope that it will go beyond the three season deal,” he continued.
Also on the cards is a new pre-season tournament that will be introduced for the first time this off-season, dubbed the Econet Soccer Spectacular.

The tournament is a one-day fundraising spectacle between four Premiership clubs that will be voted in by the public and will be held at Setsoto Stadium on Saturday, August 4.
“The purpose of the tournament is to help (Econet Premier League) clubs with start-up financing towards their league obligations as they begin every new season,” the league’s said.
“For this purpose, the norm will be that all gate-takings from the tournament will be shared equally amongst the 14 premier league clubs, and the general public will also have a chance to win exciting prizes during voting and on the tournament day.”

“This initiative, which is Econet’s idea, was shared and discussed with the heads and general managers and it was received with great appreciation and enthusiasm by the audience as this kind of assistance to them as local football clubs will be happening for the first in the history of local football,” the league explained.
Publicity and marketing around the Econet Soccer Spectacular is already underway and the general public can, therefore, be on the lookout for more details on the first of its kind event.
