Ex-Amajita boss to coach Likuena

MASERU – Former South Africa Under-20 coach Thabo Senong has been lined up to take over as coach of Lesotho’s national team, Likuena.
Sources say LEFA and Senong already have an agreement in place.
In addition, according to those close to Senong, the former Amajita coach touched down in Maseru on Monday to finalise a two-year deal to take charge of Likuena.

“Thabo Senong is going to take over as the new coach for the Lesotho national team,” the source is quoted as saying.
Hiring Senong would be a coup for Lesotho.
Senong served as Amajita coach for five years from 2014 and was involved in unearthing a number of players who went on to have success in South Africa’s top-flight Premier Soccer League.
His contract with the South Africa Under-20 side ended in June and was not extended despite taking Amajita to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland in May.

Senong achieved third-placed finishes at the 2017 and 2019 CAF Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations which qualified South Africa for successive World Cups for the first time although his charges exited at the group stage on both occasions.
Regionally, Senong moulded Amajita into a major force as they finished runners-up at the 2016 COSAFA Under-20 Championship and as winners in 2017 and 2018.

He also served as Bafana Bafana assistant coach to Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba and then initially to his successor Stuart Baxter.
Senong’s first duty in charge of Likuena would be a two-legged 2022 FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifier against Ethiopia on September 2 and 10.
Lesotho is then set to face-off against Zimbabwe in September and October for a spot at the 2020 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon.
