Fan group hosts gala

MASERU – The Futbolars’ Club Association will host their third annual awards next weekend at Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena.
Futbolars’ Club is a Facebook group made up of staunch local football followers who discuss the local game and encourage other people to follow it as well.

When the group was formed in 2016 the aim was to bring football fans together to talk about Lesotho football.

According to one of the group’s founders, Seatile Papashane, they realised a lot of local fans were following European football and it was the only thing they were discussing on social media.
He said that has changed.

Since Futbolars’ Club introduced their awards at the end of the 2016/17 league season, the perception of local football has changed.
Now it is not only members of the group that are contributing to the financing of the awards but even local fans who follow football but aren’t members.

Small businesses are also supporting the awards.
As a result, the awards have grown over the past three years. When they began, the Futbolar’s Club awards only had one category which was the player of the season accolade.

The categories have now increased to four and organisers are hoping the awards will grow even further.

“Our aim this year was to make the awards different from last year but now I don’t think they will be any different,” Papashane told thepost on Wednesday.
“Since we started hosting the awards a lot has changed, people have started following local football. When we started this on social media a lot of people were following international football but now the supporters are helping and even the small business people have been contributing. Every (group) member contributes every month all season and the people that contribute are the ones that vote for the winners,” he added.

The nominees for this year’s awards have already been released.
The Futbolars’ Club declined to reveal the cash prizes for each award saying they could change or remain the same as last year. Last year, the player of the season received M6 000 while the top goalscorer went home M4 000 richer.
The goalkeeper of the season and young player of the season won M3 000 and M2 000 respectively.

The winner of the inaugural Futbolars’ Club player of the season crown in 2017 was Bantu’s Hlompho Kalake and last year the award was won by Linare’s Rethabile Selonyane. This year the shortlist is between 2018/19 Matlama title-winning teammates Motebang Sera, Lisema Lebokollane and Phafa Tšosane.
