LEFA delegation off to Rabat
MASERU-A delegation from the Lesotho Football Association (LEFA) has jetted off to Rabat, Morocco, for the CAF Electoral Conference scheduled for tomorrow.
The delegation which is made up of LEFA’s secretariat and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) left the country on Tuesday.
South African mining magnate and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, Patrice Motsepe, is set to be elected unopposed as the new CAF president after other presidential candidates dropped out of the race and threw their weight behind Motsepe.
Last month, COSAFA nations pledged their unequivocal support for Motsepe following the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Johannesburg.
The 14 COSAFA members which Lesotho is part of, unanimously agreed that Motsepe was the best candidate to lead CAF into a new era of transparency and good governance and confirmed he would have their backing at the CAF elective conference that will take place tomorrow.
At the COSAFA AGM, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was a special guest to congratulate member associations on the astonishing growth of the game in the region in the last few years.
Motsepe, who is the chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns, has already confirmed he will step down from his club duties after he gets elected to CAF’s top position.
As the only candidate in the running, Friday’s vote is just a mere formality as Africa’s governing body will, for the first time, be led by a South African.
