Makoanyane XI take on Uganda in COSAFA semis

MASERU – Lesotho’s Under-20 national team, the Makoanyane XI, will meet Uganda in the semi-finals of the 2017 Mopani Copper Mines COSAFA Under-20 Championships this afternoon in Zambia.
The regional youth tournament kicked off last Thursday and will come to an end on Saturday.

The Makoanyane XI qualified for the final four after topping Group C with five points ahead of Zimbabwe, Angola and Namibia.
Lesotho’s only group stage win came in a 2-1 success over Namibia where Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) striker Roboama Koloti netted a brace. However, one win was enough to pip Zimbabwe to qualification.

Lesotho needed luck, however, to survive an ambitious Angola side in their 0-0 group clincher on Tuesday.
Leslie Notši’s side escaped multiple times as the Angolans camped in Lesotho’s half in the second half while the goalless draw was only good enough to advance because Zimbabwe’s tie against Namibia also ended in a stalemate.

Uganda, on the other hand, topped Group A with five points ahead of Malawi, Swaziland and hosts Zambia.
The young Cranes also played their group games before Lesotho which means Notši and assistant Bob Mafoso may have an idea of what lies ahead when it comes to their semi-final opponents.

If the Makoanyane XI progress past Uganda they will meet neighbours South Africa or Egypt in the final. Both semi-finals will be played at Nkana Stadium with Lesotho’s clash against Uganda set to be played first.
The third place play-offs and final are set for Saturday.

Lesotho’s group stage results:
December 7
Lesotho 0-0 Zimbabwe
December 10
Namibia 1-2 Lesotho
December 12
Lesotho 0-0 Angola
Uganda’s group stage results:
December 6
Zambia 0-2 Uganda
December 8
Uganda 2-2 Swaziland
December 11
Malawi 1-1 Uganda
