Senong picks squad for Zimbabwe tie

MASERU – Lesotho coach Thabo Senong has named a 20-man squad for the crucial 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Zimbabwe later this month.
The first leg will be played in Zimbabwe on September 20 with the return game in Maseru on October 18.

There is plenty at stake: the winner will qualify for the 2020 CHAN finals to be played in Cameroon next January and February.
Lesotho is on the doorstep of booking a place at its first major continental tournament.

Speaking after Likuena’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat to Ethiopia on Sunday, Senong said new faces would come into the squad for the Zimbabwe mission.
Only locally based players are eligible to play in the CHAN tournament and the new Likuena boss has made changes accordingly.
Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) star Thabo Seakhoa has earned a recall while Kick4Life starlet Tšeliso Botsane has also been rewarded with a call-up to the senior squad.

Bantu’s Neo Mokhachane and the LCS duo of Refiloe Mothae and Makara Ntaitsane are also included while defenders Bokang Sello and Mohai Mohai return to shore up the backline.
The Likuena squad will again be led by Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) defender Basia Makepe who Senong confirmed will continue as Lesotho captain for the foreseeable future.

“In the days I have worked with Basia I have seen a very level-headed and very focused athlete and you don’t fix what is not broken,” Senong told thepost.
Senong, however, added he wants to improve the leadership throughout the Likuena set-up.
“For me being a captain is just a formality, we need 11 leaders representing Likuena on the field of play,” he said.

“What I can say is we are going to enhance and produce many leaders inside the team structure. Successful teams have shown that everybody is confident on the field, always demanding. We are not going to change anything; we are just going to improve the confidence and the leadership qualities of the rest of the players in the squad.”

Senong concluded: “With regards to the Likuena armband, Basia is very focused, level headed and coachable. Besides his behaviour off the field, on the field he is doing very well. He had a top five-star performance in Ethiopia and he gave the same performance even here at home.”

Likuena squad:

Tšoanelo Koetle, Bokang Sello (Bantu), Mohai Mohai (Matlama), Refiloe Mothae (LCS), Basia Makepe, Nkau Lerotholi (LMPS), Rethabile Rasethuntša (Linare)
