Tlebere plays down discord at Matlama

MASERU – Matlama secretary general Liteboho Tlebere insists there is no discord at the Econet Premier League club after a tempestuous special conference at Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena on Sunday.

The conference, which was attended by club members including supporters, was supposed to elect an interim executive committee but tempers flared causing voting to be abandoned.

Matlama had hoped to select a board to oversee the club until their Annual General Meeting (AGM) whose date is to be announced. But, those plans were thrown into disarray when chaos over club membership erupted.

Tlebere, who chaired proceedings on the day, was the focus of the rage.

He left the conference midway through proceedings after he was forced to produce his Matlama membership card which he claimed he had left at home.

A section of the club’s members accused Tlebere of not having one.

The conference came to an abrupt end immediately after Tlebere left.

Matlama’s executives met on Tuesday evening. Thebere said the executive reconciled and apologised to him after none of them stood up for him on Sunday.

“We reconciled harmoniously after I was accused of not having Matlama membership card at the conference last Sunday,” he said.

He added that the executive peacefully mapped a way forward on when and how the club’s AGM will be held. “We came into a conclusion to call a press conference that will address media about the AGM dates on Friday,” he explained.

Sunday’s chaos began when Tlebere asked supporters in attendance to voice their opinions on whether there should be an interim committee to run the club.

Some supporters then said Tlebere should not be at the conference as he didn’t possess a legitimate Matlama membership card.

One supporter suggested the conference be stopped and all attendees to go outside the room then return again and produce their membership cards. It is at this point that Tlebere failed to produce his card and some supporters insisted he is not supposed to be in the room with them.

Despite Matlama president Ikarabelle Sello’s attempts to stop him from leaving, Tlebere left anyway.

The conference was supposed to pave the way for Matlama’s AGM but instead it once again laid bare the simmering factions that have destabilised the club over the past decade.

The current Matlama executive was elected in 2013 and their term ended in August.

The record ten-time league champions have not won a trophy since 2010.
