Businessman guns down rival over sand

MASERU – A BUTHA-BUTHE businessman is facing a murder charge.
Matela Mojapela, 60, is accused of shooting and killing his business rival in Butha Buthe on Tuesday after a heated dispute over sand they dig in a local river.

Deputy police spokesperson, Sergeant ’Mareabetsoe Mofoka, confirmed the incident last night but avoided mentioning names because some of the victim’s relatives are yet to be informed and Mojapela has not appeared in court.

The victim’s name is however known to thepost.
Sgt Mofoka said the suspect is expected to appear before the magistrate’s court today.
Mojapela is a renowned businessman who runs a series of businesses in Butha-Buthe.

His businesses include microfinance and a fleet of trucks.
Sgt Mofoka said their preliminary investigations have revealed that between 8am and 9am on Tuesday the two men argued over the sand.
She said the suspect believed that the victim, who is 58, had loaded the sand that he had already scooped in the river.
She said the victim denied that he had loaded Mojapela’s sand.
They then asked the police for mediation.

Sgt Mofoka said instead of going to the police as agreed the victim went to a site to offload the sand.
The suspect, she said, followed him. There was another altercation that ended with Mojapela allegedly pulling out his licensed 9mm pistol fatally shooting the victim.
She said victim died in a hail of bullets.

Sgt Mofoka said the deceased was rushed to a local hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
She said Mojapela handed himself to the police and also surrendered his gun.
He is being held in custody.

Witnesses said a furious mob was just about to attack Mojapela when he handed himself to the police.
Mojapela is said to be related to Socialist Revolutionaries (SR) leader, Teboho Mojapela.
