Heavy defeat for Likuena

MASERU – Battered, bruised and embarrassed.
Likuena were humbled 5-0 in Maputo yesterday in a friendly match against Mozambique. The match was the first of two Lesotho will play this week with the second scheduled for Saturday against Eswatini.

Three of yesterday’s goals came in the first half as a result of defensive mistakes, bad positioning and poor anticipation of opposition attacks.
Two goals came in the second half although Likuena were slightly better than they were in the first half.

In reacting to the humiliation, Likuena head coach Thabo Senong said despite conceding five goals his side are not mentally dejected and are still looking forward to Saturday’s game against Eswatini.
He said games like yesterday’s one give his technical staff information when it comes to team combinations and how to approach competitive games in the COSAFA Cup next month.

Senong credited Mozambique saying the Mambas have good players and played a “very good game.”
“(It was a) very tough game for us, but I want to congratulate Mozambique they played a very good game, especially in the first half,” Senong said.
“We battled tactically, we battled to react to their intensity and made a lot of mistakes in the first half, and when you concede three goals in the first half we obviously went to try to change few things and we came with a better attitude second half,” he added.

“We created a few chances for ourselves (in the second half) but unfortunately we could not score, but I thought our boys tried very hard in the second half.”
Senong backed his charges to bounce back from the heavy loss.
“I felt (Mozambique) have good players and were structured from the first minute to the last. I think there is a good positive for us to take into the (Eswatini) game and we are looking forward to it,” Senong said.

“We are disappointed but not discouraged, we still have the right mentality to go play against Eswatini.”
