MASERU-Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) and Kick4Life are set open negotiations over the transfer of Khubetsoana Kamela who has been confirmed as a recruit for the police institution.
Because Lesotho football is still played on an amateur basis, players often need the security of a fulltime job in addition to their playing careers to pay the bills.
It is expected that after Kamela completes his mandatory police training he will then join the LMPS football club, if they can agree to a deal with Kick4Life.
There is nothing to suggest an agreement between LMPS and Kick4Life will be difficult to reach. If anything, players that have joined the police service in the past have seamlessly linked up with the police football club and continued their careers with LMPS.
Kamela is still contracted to Kick4Life so although he is joining the police service, he cannot be registered to play in the Vodacom Premier League until a deal is reached with Kick4Life.
The two teams are yet to hold any talks regarding Kamela’s transfer but LMPS spokesperson Tlali Mothoana confirmed the club will assess the situation after the Lesotho youth international completes his police training.
Kamela is due to start training, which takes a minimum of six months, on February 15.
Mothoana said LMPS coach Seephephe Matete will have the final say on whether he wants Kamela and then ‘Simunye’ will begin talks with Kick4Life, as they always do with other clubs.
Kamela is not the only top-flight star that has been accepted into the police institution recently.
Lesotho international midfielder Kefuoe Mahula joined the police service this season and is already registered as a LMPS player.
Mahula, who moved from Matlama, has featured in several games for the club in the 2020/21 campaign.
“We will speak with (Kamela’s) club and negotiate with them if the coach feels he wants him in the team. At the moment he is not a registered LMPS player,” Mothoana said.
Kamela has not featured for Kick4Life this season due to an injury and it is unclear if he will make an appearance for the club again this term.
However, Kick4Life confirmed there have been no talks with LMPS and that the exciting winger is still under contract with them.
LMPS have been a model of inconsistency over recent seasons and they have failed to win a trophy since 2009.
However, LMPS’s performances seemed to improve last season and the club finished in the league’s top four when the 2019/20 campaign ended.
This season they have high hopes under a new coach in Matete.
LMPS have brought in several new faces who are not police recruits. Amongst them include veteran star Bokang Mothoana as well as role players Nkesi Rankhasa and Seeiso Lerotholi.
