MASERU – The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) are in advanced negotiations with former Matlama head coach Halemakale Mahlaha for a potential appointment ahead of the new Vodacom Premier League season.
Sources close to the club confirmed that discussions between LMPS and Mahlaha are ongoing and could be concluded soon, although no formal agreement has been signed yet.
“There have been talks, but I’m not aware of the final outcome. I believe by next week we will know for sure if an agreement has been reached,” said one individual with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
LMPS spokesperson Mosiuoa Lekhooana declined to confirm or deny the reports, saying only: “If there is anything to announce, the club will make an official statement in due course.”
Attempts to reach Mahlaha for comment were unsuccessful as his phone rang unanswered.
Mahlaha recently departed Matlama following the expiry of his contract at the end of May.
Despite leading the table for most of the season, Matlama’s title challenge collapsed in the final stretch due to a series of poor results and disciplinary issues within the squad.
Ultimately, it was Lioli who capitalised on the slip and successfully defended their title.
Matlama suspended Mahlaha with three games to go and opted not to renew his contract. The club has since appointed Shalane Lehohla as head coach.
LMPS, meanwhile, are in the market for a new coach after parting ways with Tiisetso Molete when the 2024/25 campaign ended.
It is believed Molete resigned due to frustrations with some players and club management. LMPS ended last season in 7th place with 48 points, winning just one of their final five fixtures and losing the other four.
The coaching carousel continues to spin in the Vodacom Premier League, with several clubs — including champions Lioli, Bantu, Matlama, Linare and now LMPS — all entering the new season with changes at the helm.
