Maseru – The national women’s team, Mehalalitoe, started training this week and will hold sessions every week from Monday to Wednesday to prepare themselves for upcoming friendly matches the Lesotho Football Association (LEFA) is still organising.
The senior team are not alone in sharpening their tools, the women’s Under-17 and Under-20 national sides were also in camp in Mohale’s Hoek during the Easter holidays.
LEFA technical director, Leslie Notši, said the aim is not only improve Lesotho’s national teams, but women’s football as a whole.
He said having a strong Women’s Super League would empower the national teams. Notši said LEFA is looking to arrange friendly matches in South Africa against “some of the strong teams” in the top-flight across the border.
At the moment nothing is confirmed in terms of clubs or dates, but Notši said the preference is to play on weekends to allow Mehalalitoe’s players from the districts to return home safely.
“The main focus is our league, not just the national teams; we want the league to improve and we can do this by improving the standard of coaching,” Notši explained.
“Every year we have courses to improve coaching in the women’s game and empower them.
“The national team coaches have not been announced but, as said before, we want people that can help improve the team,” he continued.
Notši said playing in South Africa would benefit Mehalalitoe.
“At the moment we are looking at numbers, the U17 and U20 teams are continuing with their programmes; they were in camp during the Easter holidays,” he said.
“When it comes to Mehalalitoe, we are looking to find matches for them in South Africa because their football is enhanced. Even if we play (against) clubs, the competition is still high,” Notši said.
For now, Mehalalitoe’s team is made up of 26 locally based players.
