MASERU – The Lesotho national women’s team, Mehalalitoe, will embark on a new chapter under coach Shalane Lehohla when they contest the 2024 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship in Gqeberha, South Africa, this week.
Lehohla has overhauled the squad with 10 new faces called up and Mehalalitoe are determined to turn a fresh page and produce a strong performance at the regional showpiece, which started on Tuesday and climaxes next Saturday.
The tournament will be Lesotho’s first since the death of former coach Pule Khojane in January.
Khojane had been at the helm of Mehalalitoe for two years and played a pivotal role in the team’s development. His death due to illness was a huge blow and left the team in a state of transition.
Lehohla has stepped in to lead the team and is hoping to build on the foundation that Khojane built while implementing his own vision for success.
His approach will be tested right away with Lesotho up against Zimbabwe and Mozambique in Group D and only one side guaranteed progress to the semi-final.
Lehohla said he believes in the abilities of his new-look squad and is confident they can fight for positive results.
Mehalalitoe defender, Thato Mapepesa, echoed Lehohla’s confidence and highlighted the team’s readiness for the competition.
Speaking to journalists on the eve of the tournament, Mapepesa emphasised that Mehalalitoe learned valuable lessons from their recent friendly matches, which helped them identify their strengths and weaknesses.
“We are not going to limit ourselves, we have set our priorities,” said Mapepesa. “(The friendly matches) helped a lot in terms of exposure. We learned a lot about our weaknesses and strengths. When we get to the COSAFA (Women’s Championship) we are going to apply what we learnt from the friendly matches.”
Lehohla’s changes to Mehalalitoe include omitting Mpolokeng Mothomotšoana, Molemo Mokhothu and Mosele Pita but the team has been boosted by the arrival of Royal AM duo, Mosili Motšoeneng and Litšeoane Maloro.
The pair bring a wealth of valuable experience and strength from playing in South Africa’s top-flight semi-professional league.
Mapepesa believes Motšoeneng and Maloro’s addition has bolstered the squad and Mehalalitoe are ready to put their newfound knowledge to the test in the COSAFA Women’s Championship.
Mapepesa also noted the emotional impact of Khojane’s death on the team, especially for younger players like herself who looked up to him.
She said the team is motivated to do well in Khojane’s memory as he would have wanted them to succeed.
For his part, coach Lehohla acknowledged that the tournament will be a tough test but he remained focused on the ultimate goal of winning.
He emphasised that while the team has had time to prepare, they had to balance their training between physical and mental readiness.
Lehohla stressed that there is no need to put himself under pressure because that can transfer onto the players. Lehohla is hoping his players can adopt a more professional mind-set and approach the game with a winning mentality.
“It looks like we had a long time but given where they were when we started, we were forced to mix,” Lehohla said.
“When we were working on the body we were also working work on the mentality. When we were working on mentality, we were also playing football. So there was no specific area we focused on,” Lehohla said.
Mehalalitoe is set to face tough competition in Group D, including a rematch against Zimbabwe, who beat them 1-0 in last year’s tournament.
Mehalalitoe, however, are optimistic and focused on making an impact.
For many in the squad, this is an opportunity to honour their former coach’s legacy by bringing home victory.
